Organization Mandate

CMS-Africa is part of the legacy of the CMS that started in 1799 with over two centuries of pioneering and transforming Christian missions worldwide. CMS-Africa was created in 2008 in response to the shift of the center of Christianity to Africa and the need to have a mission locally led by the indigenous people of Africa.

CMS-Africa has positioned to maintain the momentum of spreading the gospel across Africa and deepen the impact on whole life. CMS-Africa is intentional about developing the required capacities and frameworks to equip the Church in Africa for cross-cultural mission.

According to CMS-Africa, Mission refers to participation of the Church in God’s redemptive plan to restore humanity and creation to their original purpose, fulfilling the Mandate given at Creation (Genesis 1:28-30) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). Christian mission seeks to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ, restore creation to its original purpose, and reconcile people across cultures, ethnicities, and socioeconomic divides.

Effective Christian mission is guided by biblical principles and is Christ-centered. It is contextual, adapting to diverse settings (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). It is wholistic, addressing spiritual, social, and physical needs (Luke 4:18-19). By embracing this mission paradigm, Christians can fulfil their mission objectives: Proclaiming the Gospel, making disciples, establishing churches, caring for creation, and promoting human flourishing through social justice.

The Great Commission complements the creation mandate by emphasizing evangelism, discipleship, and community

Evangelism involves proclaiming the Gospel, inviting people to follow Jesus.

Discipleship entails teaching and nurturing believers to obey Christ’s commands. Community focuses on establishing and strengthening households and local churches by integrating these elements.
