Cultivating Peace Through Farming in Tonj, South Sudan

When Rev. Peter Chol first encountered CMS-Africa’s Wholistic Transformation Leadership (WTL) programme in Tonj North in November 2023 and subsequently in August 2024, he was deeply stirred. The training didn’t just equip him with leadership principles, it redefined his perspective on ministry, stewardship, and community transformation.
With a renewed vision rooted in biblical principles, Peter initiated a Seed Project by cultivating his land using Farming God’s Way Principles, resulting in a successful harvest season. This personal success served as a powerful witness to those around him.

He then organized and led a three-day Farming God’s Way workshop at the Makuok Agriculture Field in Warrap town, Tonj North Diocese attracting 35 participants from diverse backgrounds and clans. The training aimed to bring the clans together, transform the participants agricultural practices and ease inter-clan tensions.

Participants learned about the nine biblical and practical principles of Farming God’s Way, including composting, beekeeping, livestock health, and the innovative "God's Blanket" mulching technique. Through practical sessions on land preparation, compost making, and planting, Peter ensured the lessons were well understood, applicable and relevant.

In a region historically marred by inter-clan tensions, Peter’s leadership turned farming into a tool for peacebuilding. The participants who could not see eye to eye before worked side by side, sharing stories, laughter, and hopes for a better future, sparking a movement of reconciliation and community resilience.
Rev. Peter Chol plans to organise more trainings on Farming God’s Way to not only improve food security, but also restore relationships, and sow seeds of peace across Tonj North.
