CMS Africa Empower 160 Women in Bundibujjo, Uganda Through WEP Program

CMS Africa Empower 160 Women in Bundibujjo, Uganda Through WEP Program on 1st August 2024

CMS-Africa has empowered 160 women in Bundibujjo, Uganda, by providing them with essential financial and business skills to manage their businesses and sustain themselves with dignity.

This initiative, known as the Women Empowerment Programme (WEP) attracted participants from as far as the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and targeted women from 12 Presbyterian churches in Bundibujjo. In many African communities, women face significant social injustices, often competing in small-scale businesses with low profit margins, which makes breaking the cycle of poverty challenging.

With a population of approximately 47.3 million, Uganda ranks among the world's poorest nations, standing at 166 out of 191 countries on the Human Development Index, 2024. According to the Uganda National Survey Report 2019/2020, the median nominal monthly learnings for women is UGX 120,000, which is half of the UGX 250,000 median earnings for men, largely due to the high number of women in lower-paying jobs.

This great disparity calls for joint efforts to capacity build women, and empower them to improve their income. The WEP program focuses on mindset transformation and imparts crucial business skills to better equip women to run small businesses, sustain themselves, and uplift their communities.

CMS-Africa is committed to empowering women across nine African countries, equipping them with the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and thrive.
